This is an easy one, lift the hood and grasp the fan (engine off) it should freewheel, if it is locked up or very hard to turn the fan clutch is bad and needs to be replaced, this problem just happened to my sister's BMW. :-) Let me know what you find.

I had checked this last spring and this time it was more resistant than it was then-also started it up and watched the fan as I shut it off - the fan blades kept turning, which I've heard is also an indicator of a bad clutch. Thank You for your help! It's something new every week. What it really needs is a scrap title! Lol!

LOL yep sometimes it time to scapum' but other times its cheaper to fixum. Its a tough choice, if you do get another car, Let us know so we can help you fix it too. :-)

Yes, sometimes the fan acts like a one way clutch not allowing the clutch to freewheel, its really the only thing that can make that noise.
