Speedometer not working?

The speedometer and odometer on my husband's 1997 Nissan pickup was sticking a few months ago, but if you tapped on the plastic in the cab, it would start to work. Now neither work at all. We want to sell the vehicle, which only has about 123,000 miles on it, but are concerned that prospective buyers may think it has much more mileage on it due to its age. On the other hand, we don't want an expensive repair. What causes the problem? Can we repair it ourselves (new cable or rehook up the original)? If not, how expensive a repair should it be? Thank you.

It sounds like the VSS is out here is the location (rear of transmission) so you can replace it. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Hi,

I have a 95 D21 and the speed sensor conked out on it years ago. The speed sensor in the D21's was one of several weak spots in the truck design that had recurring issues.

Swap out the sensor and you should be good.

For a few months speedometer would go to 0 occasionally while driving but would resume working when tapping on the face. Now it's quit working altogether.

On your vehicle the speedometer is driven off the vehicle speed sensor so more then likely your speed sensor is failing. I included the entire process on how to check this. Clearly if it fails you will need to replace it. I included the part number for the manual transmission speed sensor. Let me know if you have questions and we can go from there. Thanks

Hi lawsontac,

If both had stopped working at the same time, then you need to check for a blown fuse or loose wire connection at meter. Guess speedometer is not cable driven?

If one went off after the other, then you need to check speed sensor for speedometer and coil or wire for tacho.

On my 1997 hardbody Nissan speedometer and tachometer quit working and a couple of days later temperature gauges quit working to. Any idea what could be wrong?
