My 97 jeep wrangler runs rough and has no power up hills. It also sounds different now when turning over. What could it be?

It could be many things. If it seems to have lost power, it may need a tune up, may have a partially plugged converter, weak fuel pressure. What is different about the sound when starting? Could it be related to the exhaust (converter)?
