My 1997 Jeep charokee wont turn on

When I try turning it on I hear a click noise and it shows brake (p)(!)? Is the brake (p)(!) Making it not turn on or is it the clicking noise

Check battery connectors, terminals are clean and tight, have batter load tested for condition, if you have power at the starter solinoid with key on crank and you have to starter action, get the starter tested.
