After driving for half hour or so, there is tremendous engine heat that flows thru the vents as if the heat is on. The temperature gauge does not move, and I know its working because a belt broke a few weeks ago causing overheating, and it worked. I took it to the mechanic who said the thermostat is fine. I never had a radiator flush, could that be the problem? The radiator isn't overly hot, just the entire engine.

See if your temperature control cable is broken and door is open. It may be in area where arrow is in pic.
