I have a 1997 F-150 4 x 4 4.6L V-8 which seems to be leaking oil between the transmission and motor. Can a shade tree do this project? If so what tools are needed and a step by step detailed how to would be nice? I'm assuming this would be a rear main oil seal repacement?

Chances are it is the rear main. However, make sure it isn't leaking from the intake or a valve cover and running down between the engine and trans.

As far as doing it, if you have the mechanical ability, it can be done at home, but it is a big job. The trans will need removed, the oil pan from the engine needs removed. All of this requires basic tools (nothing special).
