Transmission hard time shifting

Vehicle is a 97 dodge durango: transmission is having a hard time shifting and hard time getting it into gear from park to drive, also rpm gauge revs to red when vehicle does move.

When you can move it from park to drive, it makes a grinding noise, thinking maybe the shift link, but im not a mechanic. Need advice

Grinding noises are bad. And usually internal. Make sure it has the proper amount of transmission fluid and that the fluid is in good condition. Should be a red color, not brownish, and shouldn't smell burned.
