1997 Chevrolet Cavalier shifting problem

My car will not shift into park or any of the lower gears. It only shifts into drive neutral and reverse. So ive had to disconnect the battery because the dashboard lights stay on. Im unable to get the keys out. I made sure there was nothing jammed keeping it out of gear. Im just confused by this. Is my transmission going out or could it be something simple. Thank you

Check the shift cable underhood, while partner tries to shift the car in to park. Note which direction the shift cable moves while trying to shift into park. Disconnect the cable and shift the transmission lever into park by hand. If you can shift it into park at the transmission then the problem is likely in the shift cable.
