Engaging 4WD and back to 2WD

1996 jimmy 4wd low miles. The 2wd and the 4wd buttons how and when to engage and why will the light not stay on. Is there a sequence to do this. Running, stopped, neutral, in gear, etc.

The vehicle has a shift on the fly set up. You can shift from 2wd to 4wd high while moving or stopped. I would recommend being under 30 MPH when shifting. Is the 4wd engaging?

No it did at first but he said it doesnt seem to engage.

Okay, if the 4wd won't engage, then you need to start by checking for power at the actuator on the transfer case. Do that and let me know what you find.
