Truck quit running while driving

My 96 chevrolet s10 4.3 v6 truck cut off while driving thought I ran out of gas. Bleed the gas line and gas flows good. But truck will not start it turns over though, I was told to try the rotar and cap is this a good place to start. Also my rpm hand jumped up and down alot before it quit running

Lets check and see if you have spark also what the actual fuel pressure is?Any codes in the computer?

I can not get access to check the computer codes truck wont start cannot take it to have codes checked and I dont know how to check it for spark

They have a spark tester that goes between the spark plug and the spark plug wire. You then crank it over and see if the light in it flashes. Or you can take a spark plug and touch it to ground with it hooked up to the spark plug wire. Crank it over and watch for a nice blue spark. Getting a code reader could really help us they sell basic ones on amazon for 20 and one that reads live engine data for like 54.
