1996 Chevrolet S-10 wont shift into gear

The shifter goes all the way down with no engagement while the truck is running, and the brake engaged. I took it to a mechanic when the problem started with no answers. Now it won't even go into geer. Linkage was hard to get into geer a couple of weeks ago, now it wont go into geer at all.

If it is an automatic, it may be a bad cable or internal failure.

If it is a stick, it may be a bad clutch assembly.

I took it to a mechanic and they said they found nothing wrong. They checked it throughly execpt for one area near the stearing collum, they couldn't get to. Linkage cable seemed to work. I have an automatic trans. I think something is not secured to the cable in order to complete the shift, or something is slipping. Help can't afford a new used car with my bad credit at this time.
