On my 96 sts im having transmission problems. 1st and 2nd are fine, 3rd gear (only after it warms up) feels like its coming out of gear if im below 3000 rpm and under 60mph and hit the brakes to slow down but only after it warms up its shifts fine when cold, 4th gear stopped working all together. Reverse works fine. And it takes a few seconds to put it in gear from park. My fluid is fine iv just serviced it and there was a handfull of metal shavings in the pan so whats the bad news?

Is there a check engine light on? You could have as little as a shift solenoid failing, or deeper internal problems. If there was a 'handful' of metal shavings, that is not very promising. A little is to be expected. It may be time for rebuild or replace.

You can enter a diagnostic modde on the vehicle to get the codes. That being a 96, I'll see if I can direct you into diagnostics by memory. On your dual zone climate control head, you should have an 'off' button, and a rocker switch for the passenger temp control. Press the off button, and the passenger temp button in the warmer position, and hold(with key on). All of the VF segments should light(you can release buttons), and I believe codes will display on the info center. P codes are what you are after. Record them and post to this thread.
