Have recently replaced the head gasket and oil filter as it was overheating, since it's been put back together, revs are low when it's cold & really high (3000revs) when it's warm?
Have also fixed the fan which wasnt working in the first place, but it's hooked up so everytime the key is "on" the fan comes on and stays on. Hasn't overheated since, but the rev's just go wild once it's warm !

Is the thermostat intact?
Were the valve clearances adjusted correctly?
At cold start, what is the rpm?

Yup, check over all the pipes and everything, be lucky just to get too 1000revs at a fresh start? Just charged the battery which had died for no reason, need two new spark plugs, getting those today, so hopefully all is well once we get the new ones, could that have been the problem?

2 spark plugs? You don't change 2 at a time.

Good luck.

I meant that we found two blown spark plugs, have replaced all but still have black smoke coming from the exhaust, engine seems to be running much better now though.

If you have black smoke, it means the engine is either running very rich or misfiring is occurring.
Did you check for trouble codes?
Were the valve clearances checked?
