If you hear a single kind of loud clunk from the starter, but no sound after that, the solenoid contacts are worn. GM has plenty of common problems but that isn't one of them. If you hear the starter motor running faster than normal, but the engine isn't spinning, the flex plate is cracked around the center where it bolts to the crankshaft. You'll typically hear some type of clanking noise as the flex plate spins. To verify that, you can remove the inspection cover from the front of the transmission, then watch the flex plate while a helper turns the ignition switch to "crank".
