There is a bad gas smell

1994 Oldsmobile Ciera S, 6 cy., The car will have a hard time starting, and once it starts it back fires in the front, and sputters real bad. I have to step on the gas and hold it till it seems like it clears out. And you also smell gas real strong. Please help, don't know where to start.

Probable causes of an engine running rich are as follows:

1. Excessive fuel pressure can be cause by restricted fuel return line
2. Defective Oxygen Sensors.
3. Leaking injectors and fuel pressure regulator.
4. Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
5. Restricted air intake system.
