1994 Chevy S-10 4 cyl. 5 speed manual. Has been trustworthy long time, great mpg. Engine has suddenly developed extremely rough running, misfire, will not idle, very hard to start and keep running. What should I look at?

Little under powered truck has run pretty well for us for quite some time. Live on farm, truck stays outside. Gets great mpg, but can not haul much of a load as tradeoff. Use it to run back and forth to town, drive kids to school.

It suddenly without warning has become very hard to start and keep running, engine misfires, runs very very rough, will not idle at all on its own.

Can you good fellows suggest what to check out/replace? I am unemployed at present, but rely on this rusty trusty old vehicle to keep me in contact with the world. I am fairly mechanically inclined.

I would look at the basics. Compression, fuel pressure and spark to start with. I bet it is something with the fuel pump.

If no lights are on. After doing what ase said. It could be a fouled plug or bad wire.
