This could be an issue with the torque converter but there are a couple of things we need to check first.

First is we need to check for codes.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

If there are no codes, then we need to find out if the fluid is full and in good condition. Please use this guide to help with this process.

If these check out, then we have an issue with the torque converter clutch not releasing.

Basically, this clutch gets applied and it is not able to release and then when you shut the engine off and the pressure is released then it releases, and you can accelerate again until it is applied, and it happens again.

I am attaching some info below about downshifting that will explain this. You will need to replace the converter in order to fix this.

Please let me know about this info and we can go from there. Thanks
