Usually the clutch falls apart causing the problem you are describing, does the clutch make any noise?

I know this is a little difficult, with the engine running, see if you can hear the transmission working though the gears to confirm transfer case failure, it can be normal for metal to come out of the drain plug. If you are confident the transfer case is bad, it simply unbolts from the rear of the transmission and slides off, then you can check it manually.
