Bad shifting and noise

I have 93 Chevy Pup, 5.0 and get a growling/straining noise (hit and miss) while driving, it also seems like engine may stall at times. Nois eseems to come from area near drivetrain, but not sure. Recently, OD-4th speed Automatic is not shifting properly. Is this a Trany, Exhaust/Catalitic, or Engine problem? The noise was first, shifting later.

IT sounds like a tranny issue since the OD isn't working properly. Have the computer scanned to determine if there are any trouble codes related to the trans. Make sure the trans fluid is clean and full.
