What could cause the engine to try to start but not stay running

It will try to start but then shut off as soon as u let go of the key

Could be the heater/choke relay. Try swapping around the 2 Round relays on the drivers side on the firewall. Just to the right of the brake booster. Its a common part that fails over time. Hope thats it! Theyre cheap at your local autoparts store if thats the problem. The pics I attached are from an 89 but you can see the round looking one on the right. You should have 2 of these. Theyre both the same and can be swapped. Try that. Good Luck!
