I installed a new alternator and it showed it was charging 11.5 volts. I took it back and the new one did tne same. I checked all my connections and ground as well as the battery. Car running field 1 was 11.5 volts field 2 was 1.5. Main battery output was about 40. Any ideas?

Have the charging system checked while the alternator is on the car (autozone and other parts stores will do this for free).

Make sure that the battery ground is good (both at the battery and at the place where it ground on the engine).

Check the alternator belt to be sure its tight.

Check the fusible link which connects to the positive battery cable.

Finally, check the ground at the BLACK wire which comes from the alternator
plug-in wire connector. It grounds on the upper left of the engine.

Sure enough! There was a broken wire hidden under several other fusible links. I wouldnt have thought to look there. ( Body man not a mechanic,
What can I say?) Working fine now, thank you so much for your help!
