My 1990 c-1500 v8 truck has a 5speed manual transmission and when I change gears I hear a low pop and see smoke from the exhaust

It is misfiring when shifting. Check ignition system and fuel system for clogs. The fuel system could have a bad or dirty fuel filter or the injectors could be clogged. Run two cans of BG44K to clean it out. You will have to go to a car dealership parts counter to get it but it is the only fuel system cleaner that really works.
