I am putting a new distributor in a 89 Honda civic lx just need to know all about the timing

Make sure the cam and crank is aligned correctly and then install the distributor making sure the rotor is pointing to no.1 cap tower as illustrated in the repair manual and follow the firing order

Distributor fits in only one way. Ensure the slots for the distributor and camshaft end are aligned and slowly push the distributor in, twisting the rotor to and fro slightly to get the slots in correctly.

After installation of distributor, tighten the holding bolts slightly, with the slotted holes at about equal.
Install rotor cap and spark plug wires.
Start engine and use a timing light to check the ignition timing.
The 2nd diagram by rasmataz shows the TDC mark and if you look closely, you would see another 3 marks, use the center (red paint) to get the ignition timing correct.
