When I put my engine #1 cylinder at tdc my dist. Rotor was pointing at the number 8 spark plug on the dist. Cap so I pulled the dist. Out and turned it back a tooth to make it point to #1 and now the engine wont start it just cranks and putters out the exhaust pipe I do not understand what is going on any help would be much appreciated.

I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH YOU KNOW ABOUT "4 CYCLE"

IT'S SO EZ TO UNDERSTAND........ONCE IT CLICKS!!!!

I REMEMBER WHAT MADE IT "CLICK" FOR ME!..............THE CAM IS SPINNING HALF THE SPEED THAT THE CRANK IS!

I'D SEEN PICS OF THE STOKES AND ALL THAT KINDA STUFF......BUT CAM SPEED AND WHAT IT'S DOING DURING THE STROKES MADE ME FINALLY CATCH ON.........THIS WAS WAY BEFORE "YOU TUBE"

I'M GONNA PASTE THIS IN FROM ANOTHER ANSWER OF MINEJUST REMEMBER I'M DISCUSSING A 6 CYLINDER ENGINE

NOW THEN---MAYBE THIS STROKE VIDEO WILL AID YOU IN UNDERSTANDING THE "WHY AND HOW"---FIND MORE TO WATCH LATER!

QUESTIONS?

THIS HELP ANY?

THE ONLY OTHER GLITCH YOU MIGHT COULD HAVE---IF IF THE HARMONIC BALANCER HAS SLIPPED (OUTER RING) AND NOW THE TIMING MARKS ARE NOT CALIBRATED TO THE ENGINE.......THIS IS NOT A REAL COMMON THING

YOU STILL HAVE NOT STATED YOUR ENGINE SIZE

OK----THE CRANK OR HARMONIC BALANCER SHOWS "0" OR "TDC" ----2 TIMES DURING A 4 STROKE CYCLE

ONCE ON THE TOP OF THE EXHAUST STROKE (NOT THE ONE WE WANT)--EXHAUST VALVE IS OPEN--PISTON PUSHES THE AIR IN CYLINDER THRU THE OPEN VALVE...........NO SPIT

AS YOU TURN ONE MORE FULL TURN

BOTH VALVES ARE CLOSED---IT'S COMPRESSING THE AIR IN THE CYLINDER----THE ONLY PLACE AIR CAN GO IS TO "SPIT" OUT AROUND YOUR THUMB (THAT YOU HAVE SHOVED INTO #1 SPARK PLUG HOLE)

WHEN THE "SPIT" IS OVER YOU SHOULD BE ALMOST AT THE "0" OR "TDC" MARK

STOP AT THE MARK!!!THIS IS IT!!!THIS IS WHERE THE #1 SPARK PLUG WILL FIRE

THIS IS WHERE THE POWER STROKE WOULD START

# 1 TOWER (#1 WIRE ON TOWER) IS WHERE THE ROTOR BUTTON SHOULD POINT TO

REVIEW

COMPRESSION

STOP----EASE AROUND TO THE "0" OR "TDC" MARK----STOP---DO NOT MOVE ENGINE!

INSERT DISTRIBUTOR----POINT ROTOR BUTTON AT #1 WIRE POSITION

USE A RATCHET TO TURN THE MOTOR--NOT THE STARTER----IT'S TOO EZ TO OVERSHOOT THE MARK WITH THE STARTER

THINGS YOU MIGHT MESS UP ONTHINK HARD AND DEEP!

ROTATING ENGINE THE WRONG WAY

MAYBE THE "REAL #1 SPARK PLUG/ CYLINDER" IS NOT THE ONE YOU PULLED OUT???

YOU HAVE NOT MARKED THE MARKS EZ TO SEE---YOU OVERSHOOT THEM

WHEN YOU GET THE "SPIT"THE MARKS ARE LESS THAN 1/2 A TURN AWAY!.....PROBABLY MUCH LESS THAN THAT

YOU ARE NOT POINTING AT #1 WIRE ON THE CAP

YOU ARE NOT PUTTING YOUR WIRES ON THE CAP IN THE RIGHT FIRING ORDER

....................WHEN YOU PUT THEM ON THE CAPTHEY ARE IN THE RIGHT FIRING SEQUENCE----JUST GOING THE WRONG DIRECTION!!!

THINGS THAT COULDA WENT WRONG---WILL NEVER WORK----TILL YOU REPLACE STUFF

HARMONIC BALANCER IS 2 CIRCLES WITH RUBBER SEPARATING THEM----THE INNER "KEYWAY" AND "TIMING MARK" ARE "FACTORY PERFECT" IN ALIGNMENT.........IF THE RUBBER GETS OLD, OR OIL SOAKED----THE TWO CIRCLES COULD SLIP OR MOVETHE MARKS ARE NO LONGER IN "SYNC".....I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS REAL OFTEN

ANOTHER POSSIBILITY IS THE TIMING CHAIN HAS JUMPED COGS---NOW THE CRANK AND CAM ARE NOT IN SYNC---AND WON'T BE UNTIL YOU REPLACE THE SET

YOU SORTA FAILED TO EXPLAIN HOW WE EVEN GOT TO MESSING WITH THE 'STRIBUTOR TO BEGIN WITH???????

THIS MIGHT MAKE ME UNDERSTAND THE DEAL HERE A LITTLE BETTER

OLE DAVID AND CHAD---DO A HECK OF A JAM UP JOB 'SPLAINING THISMAYBE WATCH THEM WITH A MECHANICALLY MINDED PALTHIS MIGHT MAKE THINGS CLICK FASTER

As you didn't list engine size I am assuming this is a 305 V8 i'm sending firing order and pic of dist. The way that you ;may be looking at the position is kinda screwy as the gm series engine actuatlly are timedat about 11:30 position so if it were advanced a little it may look lke it is firing on #8. If the car runs ok don't worry about it. Youneed to put it back where it was, there may be some gear wear on the dist. What you actually did was retard the dist so it won't fire correctly. It could also be from timing chain wear /stretch.
