We recently purchased a 1984 Camaro Z28 as a 'Project" car. After driving it home and a couple of weeks sitting in the driveway we rechecked the ATF level before taking it to a exhaust repair shop. What we originally thought was slightly burnt ATF looks, smells & feels like fairly clean Motor Oil!

What now? & Why would someone fill an automatic tranny with motor oil?

Have the transmission drained and refilled. Somebody could have done it by accident or just wanted to top it off so they used oil. Does it have a burnt smell? While they are at it ask if they can replace the transmission filter. Some place like a lube shop will not change filters so you will have to ask around. Have seen oil put in the transmission before. Seen some people do stupid stuff in my life.
