I just got this jeep and I went to go up a hill we put it in 4 low and the back tires were spinning and the front done nothing they were not pulling like they were in 4 low when I got it the front hubs were locked in for road use. I know right? Anyhow befor I do anything I figured I would ask you. It seems like there is nothing connected to the front if that helps.

THE LOCKING HUB FEATURE WAS ADDED TO JEEPS AFTER THEIR INITIAL USE

ON EARLY JEEPS LIKE MY '46, THE FRONT AXLE TURNED ALL THE TIME REGARDLESS WHETHER THE ENGINE WAS PULLING THEM IN 4X4 OR IF THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY TURNED WHEN IT WAS IN THE 4X2 POSITION (BACK THEN, THAT WAS FREEWHEELING)

WHAT WE NEED TO DECIDE IS WHETHER YOU HAVE A TRANSFER CASE PROBLEM. OR A LOCKING HUB PROBLEM

IF ONE HUB IS NOT LOCKED. YOUR FAULT. OR A MECHANICAL DISCREPANCYTHE FRONT WHEELS WILL NOT PULL!

THE SIDE THAT IS NOT LOCKED IS JUST "FREE", THE OTHER SIDE "THINKS" THAT IT IS BOGGED DOWN OR LOCKED. ALL POWER IS TRANSFERRED TO THE FREE SIDEEVERYTHING IN THE AXLES TURNS AS IT SHOULD. BUT NEITHER WHEEL WON'T GET POWER

LETS TRY THE EZ CHECK 1ST

LOCK YOUR HUBS IN

WITH YOUR FINGERS OR PUSHING THE U-JOINTS THAT ARE OUT ON THE ENDS OF THE AXLE, WITH A RATCHET EXTENSION, SCREWDRIVER, ETC

THE U-JOINT SHOULD NOT TURN ON THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER SIDE

UNLOCKING THE HUBS, THEY SHOULD TURN FREE

SEE MY 1ST PIC---USING MY FINGERS, I CAN TURN MINE WHEN THEY ARE UNLOCKED

OTHER PICS ARE OF MY '77, YOUR LOCKING HUBS MAY BE A DIFFERENT BRAND

GET BACK WITH THAT---GIVE ME A BETTER STORY ON HOW LONG YOU HAVE HAD IT---WHEN IT WORKED CORRECTLY---ALL OF THE DRAMA. THIS HELPS ME A LOT

WE WILL CONTINUE WHEN YOU RETURN WITH RESULTS

OK when there locked in they do not turn when unlocked they turn freely. Now the story, we got this jeep 1 week ago from a guy who upgraded some things and tinkered with it painted it don't know what all but he was less qualified to do anything to it than me and that is kinda bad. First trip I herd a rattle in the back wheel, we went up a hill lost almost all breaks and the jeep keeps staling on steep inclines went home rear brakes were in pieces springs adjuster screw were free riding the drum. Fixed that bleed front and rear and what do you know I can now stop. By the way thank you for the response and the stalling thing will be the next question. Most likely not the last just next lol. One more thing when we put the shifter in 4 low it goes farther than it should and is hard to get out. We can feel were it needs to be but it goes farther rather easy

I'M ON MY LAPTOP RIGHT NOW....I MADE LABELED A PIC LAST NIGHT FOR YOU, IT'S ON THE BIG COMPUTER...I'LL SEND IT WHEN I GET BACK IN FRONT OF IT

ARE YOU MECHANICAL?

WITH A LITTLE PUSH AND PICS ARE YOU ABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT TO DO TO THINGS?

DO YOU HAVE A REPAIR MANUAL?

TOOLS?

VOLTMETER?

TACH/DWELL METER?

TIMING LIGHT?

THESE ARE NOT REAL EXPENSIVE ITEMS--I CAN HELP YOU FIND THEM IF YOU DON'T HAVE THEM......YOU WILL NEED THEM TO DO PROPER FIXES AND TUNING

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/2007-ford-taurus-tune-up

I HAVE NOT GOT AS FAR AS EXPLAINING "HOW TO" AND STEP BY STEP WITH BRAKE REPLACEMENT....I HAVE DABBLED A LITTLE INTO IT....MOST CJs THAT COME HERE ARE NOT RUNNING...SELDOM A BRAKE ISSUE. HERE'S SOME IMPORTANTS

SOMETIMES OTHER FOLKS JUMP IN AND LEAVE REPLIES---INSURE YOU KNOW "WHO IS WHO" IN THE POSTS, BY THEIR NAMES AT THE BOTTOM!!!......I ALSO AM LINKING YOU TO DIFFERENT POSTS CONCERNING DIFFERENT VEHICLES......KEEPS ME FROM RE-HUNTING AND PECKING IT OUT ALL OVER AGAIN!.....I HOPE YOU CAN FOLLOW ALONG!

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1997-toyota-t-100-left-rear-brake-locks-cold

I HAVE ANSWERED MOST ALL OF THE CJs FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS OR SO (SEE THE CJ 5 & 7 FORUMS....THIS COULD AID WITH OTHER STUFF)...HERE'S ANOTHER BRAKE POST....SEE MY ANSWER ON "JULY 4"

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1999-ford-f-150-brakes--3

AND ONE MORE

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/2002-jeep-wrangler-rear-drum-getting-hot

SALVAGE WHAT YOU CAN OUT OF THESE LINKS

I HAVE A LOT MORE INFO I CAN GIVE....IF YOU EXPLORE THE CJ FORUMS YOU WILL SEE I HANG W/ SOME OF THESE GUYS FOR MONTHS AND ANSWERS GO INTO OVER 100 RESPONSES FOR SOME POSTS

I WILL "TAILOR" MY ANSWERS TO YOU, EVEN WHEN USING LINKS....DO WHAT YOU KNOW SHOULD BE DONE AS FAR AS "GETTING MAINTENANCE AND BROKE STUFF FIXED RIGHT" (IF YOU EXPLORE THE OTHER POSTS)......AS FAR AS TRYING TO METHODICALLY DO TROUBLESHOOTING, TO SAVE TIME AND $$$.....LET ME TRY TO GUIDE YOU!!!!......DON'T JUMP WAY AHEAD!

YOU SHOULD SEE THE TRANSFER CASE PIC I MADE, WITHIN AN HOUR, WHEN I GET BACK TO THE BIG COMPUTER

ARE WE OK SO FAR?

LETS GET BACK TO THE: "I'VE HAD HIM FOR A WEEK" THING

YOU DON'T KNOW THE HISTORY---PEOPLE DON'T TELL THE TRUTH

I CHANGE EVERY FLUID WHEN SOMETHING NEW GETS TO MY HOUSE--I ALSO INSPECT THE BRAKE SYSTEM FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER

AN "INFANT'S SNOT S.UCKER" AND A PIECE OF 5/16 FUEL LINE HELPS W/ THE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE POWER STEERING (IF YOU HAVE IT)

THE DRIVE TRAIN IS NEXT---MOST NEVER GET ATTENTION UNTIL SOMETHING BAD GOES WRONG.....THE "SUPER DOOPER LUBE" PLACE USUALLY TRIES TO S.UCK THE GEAR OIL OUT THRU THE FILL HOLETHIS DOES NOT EVEN "CLOSELY" GET THE CRAP AND WATER OUT OF THE BOTTOM...THE COVERS MUST BE REMOVED TO DO IT RIGHT!

I'M PRESENTLY ABOUT TO TAKE PICS ON HOW TO DO THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SO BEAR WITH ME...I WILL DO IT SOON...HOLD OFF ON THE REAR

SEE THIS POST

CJs HAVE REMAINED THE SAME (MOSTLY) SOME OF THE LATER ONES--LIKE '82 ON UP---SOME THINGS HAVE CHANGED, SOME/MOST HAVE NOT.......BE ALERT AND CAREFUL THAT YOU DON'T TRY A REPAIR, SPECIFICALLY MEANT FOR ONE OF THEM!

SEE "AUGUST 23, 2012" AT THIS POST......HE ALSO NEEDS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL PICS I'M ABOUT TO MAKE

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1978-jeep-cj7-need-help-getting-started-start-on-troubleshooting

LETS GET PICS OF THAT IGNITION AND DISTRIBUTOR TO ME SOON---I UPGRADED MY 1977 TO "MOTORCRAFT" JUST LIKE A '79-UP HAD----THE PRESTOLITE DISTRIBUTOR AND MODULE FOUND IN '78 ON BACK WAS CRAP-CRAP-CRAP!!!!

PICS OF THE WHOLE JEEP AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT TOO...FOCUSED...DIFFERENT VIEWS

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT YOURS---ENGINE--POWER ????----LIFT?---TYPE CARB---TIRE SIZE????

YOUR INTENTIONS WITH HIM--SHORT AND LONG TERM

ALTHOUGH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SURPASS ME.....DO YOU 'REALLY' LOVE YOUR JEEP?

IS THERE FEMALE INFLUENCE ON YOUR END THAT MAY HINDER YOUR SPENDING OF $$$ TO GET YOUR NEW PAL STRAIGHTENED OUT???

HERE'S THE PICS---THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFTER SHOULD HAVE LITTLE SIDE TO SIDE MOVEMENT--SNUG THE BOLT IF YOU NEED TO---DON'T LOCK IT SO IT CANNOT MOVE

THE JEEP THROUGHOUT IT'S LIFE SHOULDA GOT A DIRT ROAD RIDE (NOT A PAVED ROAD) ONCE A MONTH WITH THE 4X4 ENGAGED TO KEEP EVERYTHING LUBED....FOR AT LEAST A MILE.......... OBVIOUSLY NOT!

ONCE IT'S GOING, YOU WILL HAVE TO DO IT RIGHT, FROM HERE ON OUT

I HAVE TO WORK FROM 1600 HRS-2130 HRS EASTERN, IF YOU WANT ME TO, I CAN PUT MINE IN ALL OF THE POSITIONS AND TAKE PICS SO YOU CAN SORTA SEE WHAT IS NORMAL FOR THE SHIFTER...LET ME KNOW

LAST PIC MY OTHER "REAL VEHICLE" BESIDE "EXPENSIVE WANNA-BE" TRUCK.....THEY COME IN THE STORE AND ASK ALL ABOUT MINE....BUT NOT MUCH ABOUT THE OTHER GUYS RIG! I GUESS THEY SORTA KNOW, "JEEP WROTE THE BOOK ON FOUR WHEEL DRIVE"

LAST THING BEFORE I GO TO WORK

NOW THAT YOU SEE WHAT THE TRANSFER CASE LINKAGE LOOKS LIKE OUT IN THE OPEN---LOOK UNDER YOURS AND INSURE THE "PINS" ARE IN PLACE. PEOPLE SHOVE NAILS AND OTHER CRAP IN THE HOLES WHEN THEY GET LOST. AS YOU CAN SEE THE ONE SHIFTER LEVER CONTROLS TWO (2) RODS. THE TWO RODS MOVE INDIVIDUALLY. ONE WILL MOVE THEN "DETENT" INTO A SLOT (INTERNALLY)THEN THE OTHER WILL MOVE

DEPENDING UPON WHAT SETTING YOU PUT IT IN, ONE ROD MAY MOVE (THEN LOCK) THEN THE OTHER (THEN LOCK) THE 1ST ONE MAY UNLOCK AND MOVE AGAIN. THIS INSURES THE GEARING GETS MOVED WITHOUT BINDING WITH THE OTHER GEARING

MY 1946 HAS 2 LEVERS, ONE FOR EACH ROD, ON SOME OF THE POSITIONS ONE SHIFTER WILL NOT MOVE UNLESS THE OTHER IS IN A CERTAIN POSITION

KEEP WORKING YOURS THRU THE POSITIONS AFTER IT'S LUBRICATED AND THE LINKAGE IS CORRECTLY "HINGED OR PINNED"---THEY DO GET STIFF---DO NOT ABUSE IT! PUSHING WITH YOUR FOOT OR LIGHT KICKS, IS ABOUT AS EXTREME AS I WOULD GO. NO HAMMERS OR LEVERING. STUFF WILL BREAK!

OK weekend over, communicate at your convenience I understand and thank you. Well you were correct people will put anything in a hole to hold something, the linkage had a giant cotter pin in it and interfered with putting it in low range, took it out put proper pin in and it now works awesome. The breaks I can do I have done lots of them, I am however going to put new bearings rotors drums pads springs adjusters in and bleed all new fluid in.I got pics for you, the wife is very tolerant we did this 25 years ago to another 77 cj7 but I had a lot of help then and will need now. Her and I both miss the jeep so here we are with another, we don't really want to raise it IE rock crawler we both agree it will go were we want it to, we just want it running proper so we can enjoy it. I drove them in the USMC in the 80s and always was impressed. So there you have it, thank you.

VERY GOOD.'CEPT FOR THE JAR HEAD PART!

AIRBORNE RANGER ('82-'87) WAS ON A SNIPER TEAM DURING THE LAST 2 YEARS OR SO. STATIONED AT HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD SAVANNAH, GA (WHEN I WAS THERE) I'VE BEEN TO "THE ISLAND" MANY TIMES TO SHOOT ON YA'LLS "GOLF COURSE SHOOTING RANGES"!

1ST PIC SEE WHAT TOOK THE PLACE OF MY US ARMY "DINKY" RIFLE EXPERT BADGE (THIS WAS PRIOR TO GETTING E-5)

2ND AND 3RD PIC-- GLIMPSES INTO MY MAN CAVE COMPLETE WITH FULL SIZE "TOY RANGER". MY 2ND "GOOD (KEEPER) WIFE" LET ME HAVE THIS ROOM

OK.I WON'T WASTE MY TIME WITH PICS OF THE TRANSFER CASE POSITIONS. SINCE YOU GOT IT STRAIGHT

.I'M GOOD AIN'T I.I HAVEN'T SEEN IT ALL, I HAVE SEEN THE "NAIL THING" IN THE LINKAGE BEFORE!

COMES FROM OWNING NOTHING BUT 6 CJ 5s AND 1 WILLYS, SINCE 1981---WHICH ARE/HAVE BEEN MY PRIMARY DRIVERS.I'VE HAD THE '77 AND '46 SINCE THE EARLY '90s (THEY SEEM TO LAST LONGER AS YOU GET OLDER). NO TELLIN' HOW MANY I'VE HELPED WITH FOR OTHERS

I STARTED DOIN' THE COMPUTER THING (NEVER HAD TOUCHED ONE BEFORE) IN DECEMBER '08 WHEN I BROKE MY FOOT AT WORK AND HAD MANY COMPLICATIONS WITH IT. THAT'S HOW I SORTA GOT STARTED AT 2CAR.

IT'S A CHALLENGE SOMETIMES, WHEN YOU CAN'T SLAP SOMEONE ON THE BACK OF THEIR HEAD AND "HANDS ON" SHOW 'EM WHAT TO DO. I AM THANKFUL THAT MOST OF THE CJ QUESTIONS I ANSWER, HAVE SOMEONE COMPETENT ON THE OTHER END.I DO ANSWER OTHER CARS AND TRUCKS, THAT I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF, OR ARE GENERIC. THESE NEW COMPUTER RIGS ARE TOO DANG COMPLICATED WITH SENSORS

I AM STRICTLY DIY, MOSTLY WITH A REPAIR MANUAL, LEARNING FROM OTHERS, "SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS". I HAVE AUTO EXPERIENCE (MOSTLY CJs) AND RELATED TRAINING.I DID NOT GO TO SCHOOLS (EXCEPT FOR HIGH SCHOOL, AUTO, ELECTRICITY, AND MACHINE SHOP.I'M PRETTY GOOD WITH "PRE-COMPUTER AGE VEHICLES)

I'LL HANG WITH YOU. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP THROWIN' STUFF AT ME

HAVE YOU SEEN OTHER POSTS O HAVE ANSWERED?

AS FAR A NEW PARTS YOU NEED.

THIS IS "ADVANCE AUTO PARTS". WHERE I DID THIS

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A JEEP BATTERY. AND JUG OF WASHER FLUID TO "GET ME" OVER THE $100 MARK

THIS ALLOWED ME TO USE "ONE" OF MANY PROMO CODES I COULD FIND FOR THE STORE. THIS PARTICULAR ONE SAVED ME THE MOST FOR MY PURCHASE AMOUNT (OVER $100 SAVE $40!).

I JUST GRAB A NEW TAB AND TYPE IN "PROMO CODES FOR ADVANCE AUTO (OR WHEREVER)". YOU MUST LOOK THRU LOTS OF SITES TO FIND THE BEST DEALS

YOU GOTTA DO YOUR HOMEWORK TO GET THE MOST OUTTA WHATEVER PROMO CODES YOU FIND (MAYBE ONE MIGHT SAY "OVER $200 SAVE 30% + A $50 COUPON"

IF YOU ARE GONNA "PICK UP AT STORE"---RULE OUT THE FREE SHIPPING PROMOS

. THIS "SYSTEM" WORKS AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE. ELECTRONICS STORES. STEAK HOUSES. USE YOUR IMAGINATION!

JUST FOR GIGGLES, I PUT IN THE SAME PROMO CODE I USED ( "FABU" ) AND "PRETENDED A PURCHASE" ---STUCK IT IN MY CART THEN RAN IT THRU THE CHECK OUT. THIS PROMO CODE "FABU" STILL WORKS FOR OVER $100."SELECT STORE" AND "PICK UP AT STORE". ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS WAIT AN HOUR. CODES DO EXPIRE. NOOOO! I TOOK IT OUT OF MY CART, YOU'RE SORTA BACK ON YOUR OWN!

I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO RUSH OUT AND SPEND $$$.I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP IF YOU HAVE TO, EVEN IF YOU GOTTA THROW IN A USEFUL ITEM (RAGS, WAX, TOOLS, WHATEVER), TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A CODE. HOW 'BOUT THIS?

GOT A OVER $200 ORDER--NO PROMOS HELP A LOT?----SPLIT IT INTO 2 SEPARATE ONLINE ORDERS OF JUST OVER $100 EACH---PROMO CODE EACH ONE. IN RANGER BATTALION THE SAYIN' WAS, "IF YOU AIN'T CHEATIN'. YOU AIN'T TRYIN'!"

USE THIS METHOD NOT ONLY FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT DOWN THE ROAD TOO FOR OTHER STUFF. MAYBE A FLAT SCREEN TV?

I DID A SCREEN SHOT OF MY PURCHASE--IT MAYBE HARD TO SEE.I SAVED $40 ON A $96 BATTERY AND SOME WIPER JUICE!

WHAT A DEAL!1. GOOD THING YOU HOOKED UP WITH ME HUH?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ATTACK NEXT?

I did some training with some rangers around 83 4 of them and 4 of us after all the pissing contest were over we had a great time, the wonders of youth, and I will say you guys went threw some crazy and harsh crap way more than we went threw, for that I salute you. Awesome man cave wow took me back and gave me idea lol. OK next deal on jeep, for some reason I can't get pics to load I will keep trying, I have a Holley 2 barrel and a edelbrock intake thinking of doing a edelbrock 4 barrel but latter, going up hill 35 to 40 degree we stall and have to get jeep back to level put gas in carb to start it sputters going down the road a couple times but only stalls going up hill, fuel filter and pump? By the way it has a mechanical pump.

MY GOSH!

NO WONDER YOU JEEP WON'T GO. IT HAS NO WHEELS. AND 3 BOATS ARE RUNNING OVER IT!

THE VERY BIGGEST PROBLEM YOU MIGHT HAVE IS "VACUUM LEAKS"

IS ALL OF THE NON-NEEDED-VACUUM-CRAP (NNVC!) OUT OF THE EQUATION?

NO OPEN VACUUM PORTS ON THE MANIFOLD OR CARB?

TELL ME WHAT DOES USE VACUUM (LIST 'EM) AND WHAT EACH ONE USES: MANIFOLD OR PORTED VACUUM?

A HALOGEN WORK LIGHT (DAY LIGHT IT IN THERE!--LAY THE HOOD ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME)---BREATHER/ AND IT'S HOSES REMOVED GIVE ME LEFT/RIGHT/ABOVE PICS. JUST A HAIR CLOSER IN, THAN THE MIDDLE PIC YOU POSTED ABOVE

LET'S GET THE FUEL SYSTEM "CORRECT"---I CANNOT SEE THIS IN YOUR PICS. SEE PICS 1-3

ARE YOU SET UP LIKE MY PICS? (6 CYL HAS SAME SET UP AS AN 8 CYL)

IS YOUR CARB FLOAT SET CORRECTLY?

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE MAX PRESSURE FOR THE CARB IS?

IS CARB PROPERLY ADJUSTED?

IS TIMING CORRECT? DID IT WITH CORRECT RPM AND VACUUM ADVANCE PLUGGED OFF. SEE MY "COMBO PIC" (PIC 4). VAC LINE IS PLUGGED WHILE BEING TIMED, THEN REPLACED BACK ON WHEN DONE

ARE YOU 100% CONFIDENT IN YOUR TIMING AND CARB TUNING---OR IS THIS SORTA NEW TO YOU?

IS VACUUM ADVANCE LINE MANIFOLD OR PORTED VACUUM?

WHAT IS YOUR TIMING. WHAT IS THE RPM WHEN TIMING. RPM FINISHED, READY TO GO AT IDLE?

A LOT TO ANSWER. IF YOU WILL, NUMBER YOUR ANSWERS W/ A BRIEF EXPLANATION TO WHAT IT MEANS. EX:

1) MAX CARB FUEL PRESSURE IS "x"

2) VAC LINE TO PCV (MANIFOLD)
VAC LINE TO DISTRIBUTOR (PORTED)
ETC

THIS HELPS A LOT WHEN I GO LOOKING BACK FOR STUFF!

WE'LL DO FUEL DELIVERY TESTING SOON

YOUR TURN

Lets start there. I do have the tools you asked about but I didn't say I know how to use them however I will figure it out as we go.

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE RETURN LINE?

HAS IT BEEN CAPPED OFF?

THIS IS A GIVEN--THE FUEL PUMP IS ON IT'S "CORRECT LINE"---OTHERWISE IT WOULD NOT S.UCK FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK

THE RETURN LINE DUMPS INTO THE "TOP" OF THE TANK (NO TUBE TO THE BOTTOM)

SEE???? IN MY LINK THE LONG TUBE GOES TO THE FUEL PUMP AND THE OTHER IS THE INLET BACK IN, FROM THE RETURN LINE

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_steel-fuel-tank-dorman--oe-solutions_22149345-p?searchTerm=fuel+tank+sending+unit#

I WANNA KNOW THE STATUS OF THE RETURN LINE ON BOTH ENDS OF IT

WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO PUT IT BACK LIKE IT SHOULD BE
