International Scout starting problems

I need help with this I have gotten my scout to run but I noticed that the wires got hot but now the scout wont even start it acts like it will but it doesn't and the negative wire starts to smoke when I crank it any suggestions

If the negative battery wire smokes when trying to start, clean it at the body /engine or where eer itis connected. Also make sure there is a battery tpe wire going from engine to battery and engine to frame. Then check for fuel and spark. Your points shold be set a t 30 degrees dwell and timing somewhere areound 5 degerees btdc shold do ok.
