Whining noise

Noticing whinny/humming noise when accelerating and when let off gas stops. Transmission flush was done recently. Car drives normal besides this noise. Could it be differential? They recommended getting those flushed last oil change. Headed out of town next weekend, should I consider renting a vehicle?

Thank you.

Good morning,

Does the noise change pitch when you turn the steering wheel?

Was the transmission filter changed with the service?

Can you take a video with sound of the noise and upload it so we can hear it?

I can try and upload a video today. Not a change in pitch when turn and I will check to see if they changed the filter as I am not sure.

Thank you.

Okay, a clogged filter will cause the noise.

I would have the pan dropped and the filter changed out. Good possibility that could be your noise.

Is this something that we can do at home, or does vehicle need to be jacked up?

You can do it at home.

Yes, it has to be jacked up to gain access to the transmission pan.

You will need a filter and about six quarts of fluid. Any parts store should stock these parts.

Good.

That sounds like a noise from the drive train. It could be differential or axle bearing.

You need to take this to a shop and have them drive it and give you an opinion. That is a noise from a bearing somewhere. Just difficult for me to give a good clue not being there.

Thanks! I have an appointment set up on Wednesday. In your opinion will driving it cause more harm?

Not from the video. You have a short period of time to get it looked at.

Once they have an opinion, let us know the results.

Forgot to ask, in your opinion is it urgent to get looked at? We are planning on going out of town and wanted to drive truck. This might not be best idea? I am dropping off Wednesday. Hoping they can look at it, not appt specifically.

No, do not go until the issue is determined. Then we can discuss whether you can take it on a long drive.

At this point, no, do not take it.

That is very, very high.

All the parts at rock auto are around $300.00 minus the fluid.

$3,000.00 for labor is a joke. It is about a six hour job. That is about $750.00. That means the job is worth around $1,000.00 to $1,100.00.

We thought the same! Took to dealership so figured was way high. Have to find mechanic now. I did not get a chance to ask dealership if all of the recommendations had to do directly with the noise we are hearing, they did a whole vehicle inspection. Thanks for your feedback!
