I drove a couple hundred kilometers in one day and it was raining extreamly hard and since then when im driving without any warning the car just dies and sometimes restarts imideatly and other time takes over an hour to start I replaced the air filter because it was wet and the distibutor cap because it was worn but the problem hasnt stopped

It is more than likely the fuel pump on the out side of the car. There is one in the tank and one in line. It is located by the pass. Side back tire. It looks like a square box. I have a 1990 jetta and I will be driving down the road and it will die. I can hear the pump making noises and when it makes a certain high pitch noise it will fire right up.
