1972 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual? Miles

I have replaced the started and the ignition switch. When I turn the key, I just get one click (as though it has a dead battery). I don't think there is a ground problem and all of the fuses are fine. What do I check next?

Make sure that the starter is not binding against the flywheel, if it's making a one click it sounds like it's engaging and then it gets jammed.
