1972 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have checked my timing, which is right. I've got fuel into carb. But all it does is backfire out of exhaust. Any advice would be great

Hi There,

check that the firing order is correct and check the valve clearances. There is a notch to locate No 1 Cyl on the dist Firing order 1.4, 3, 2. No 1 Cyl is R/H R.2 is R/H/F 3 is L/H/R 4 is L/H/F.
