Car was purchased 2 years ago with check engine light on. The codes then were 02 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 and Camshaft position sensor.

Only issue prior to last week was when car was filled up with gas it had a hard time starting. Holding the gas to the floor while cranking worked. (Purge valve?)

the big issue happened last week. On the return side of a 2,500 mile round trip acceleration was normal until 60 MPH then sluggish until 80 MPH where it would not go any faster. RPM's never redlined. Then there was low power on acceleration from a stop, then normal until 60 again.

May be worth mentioning that we never noticed an increase in smoke from the tailpipe.

The next day she tells me that on the way home from a 60 mile round trip the car will not accelerate past 40 MPH, the RPMs redlined and the car overheated. When cooled down, it drove the last 10 miles under 35 MPH (city driving) with only the low power/acceleration issues.

Today she took it to O'Reilly's and the codes are:

p2097, p0420, p0017, and p0008.

I am going there after work today and see if they can tell me which camshaft position sensor it is and plan on starting there.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

My first concern with the power loss and the P0420 is a plugged catalytic converter. Also, the idea that the gas pedal was held down and it started tells me we are getting too much fuel. That shut down the injectors to clear a flooded engine.

Okay, the cam sensor is bank one, exhaust. If you look at the attachments below, they include the directions and pictures specific to this vehicle for replacement.

Once that is replaced, let me know the results. If it still is lacking power, try removing the oxygen sensors before the catalytic converters to see if it makes a power difference. If it does, then we have a plugged converter.

Take a look at this link as well:

Let me know.
