My car is getting spark and gas but will not start. Prior to this it was running rough when I came to a stop and would shut off when trying to take off.

Scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it. See link.

I replaced my thermostat due to heater not working. It started working after that. Next day drove 15 miles and car started choking or engine cut out 3 times on freeway I pulled off 4 exit and it died. Would not restart had to tow it home now it won start just tuns over. We checkied the plugs and there is alot of oil on them. The car still has compression fro the cylinder. When we checked by removing a plug and trying to start the car.

Inpsect and test the coolant temperature sensor and also check the fuel pressure then comeback with the pressure readings so that we can move on to other areas.

The car will not start when its cold sometimes, try doing below

Get a carb cleaner and spray into the carb or the throttle body on an EFI. Did it start and die? If not disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light.

If both fuel and spark is present-check the valve and ignition timing, this will lead you to problems with compression and valves opening and closing at the wrong time

Sometimes the car wont start. It turns over but wont start, turn off key and wait a few then it is fine. Or starts just fine then dies a couple minutes later. I have to turn off the key and put into neutral if driving then turn key back on to start. It does not hesitate it dies like a switch is turned off. Worse when hot outside. When it is hot it may take several minutes to start, just the starter nothing in the engine catching and trying to start, then all of a sudden it is like a switch is turned on and it starts.

When it doesn't start, you need to check fuel pump pressure and if there is spark to the engine. One will most likely be missing. Then you will know which circuit to focus on.

My 83 Toyota Tercel won't start after sitting for a couple months in the rain. I have fuel and spark, turns over fine. Replaced spark plugs and even tried starting fluid and gas in the carb. Checked rotor and cap, both seem fine. Have fuel to the carb with plenty of pressure, but it won't fire at all. Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have a way to compression test it, but if you think thats the most likely I guess I'll try to find a tester. Thank you.

The 1994 Toyota Tercel DX won't start. The problem last time was the distributor and installed new one. I smelled something like burning but not consistent when driving. Car drove great. I didn't use it for a week and When I started it nothing happened except the lights turned on. I jumped the car and it started and I let it run for 5 minutes. But I tried it another day and nothing again. It has new battery, spark plugs and plug wiring. Could it be a defective distributor?

Is the starter turning the engine over or is it dead? If it is turning the engine, have you checked fuel pump pressure and have you checked to see if there is spark to the plugs?

Sounds like you might have a faulty starter. The next time it doesn't start have someone hold the key over in the ignition switch like they're trying to start the car while you firmly tap on the started with a hammer or extension. If the engine starts when you tap the starter, you'll need a starter. The starter contacts are probably worn causing intermittent starting issues.
