1986 Subaru wagon, 4x4

Hello,

I was driving my Subaru this afternoon when the engine started running rough and losing power fairly quickly. I had it towed to my mechanic who thinks it may the the timing belt.

How big of a job is it to replace the timing belt?

Thank you!

Hi there,

These engines have two timing belts, one for each bank, so if one has failed it will be running on only 2 cylinders. To change both belts should only take about 11/2 -2 Hrs tops. Best to have the tensioner and idler pulley bearings changed at the same time.
