My 1991 AWD Subaru Legacy became a front-wheel drive wagon. I took it to one mechanic who could not diagnose the problem. I think the problem is that the transfer case (not sure if that is the right term) went bad and I lost all drive power to the rear wheels. The special fuse for FWD only (for towing) is not installed. Any advice is appreciated.

I've got a '93 legacy, and the same problem.

What's happened is the clutch pack in your transmission that would power the rear wheels has burnt out. I'm in Calgary AB, Canada, so If I put my foot to the mat for a few seconds (while the front wheels spin on snow and ice), I hear/feel a very loud THUNK and all of a sudden my rear wheels have some power, and once I start going, they die again.

I've been quoted $1200 for the repair (via a dealer). As I'm only driving the car for a year (maybe two tops), I'm not going to have it fixed, as I won't make that money back in resale.

Hope that helps
