The car seems to stall when I start it up once and then from time to time when it is at idle. No light is on in the dash. I just replaced the fuel filter. I am not sure if it is an electrical problem or fuel problem.

Good morning my name is Roy and I will assist.

It could be fuel delivery from the fuel pump itself. You would need to verify the actual pressure. You can rent one at a parts store to verify.

It could also be spark related. When it stalls does it start right back up or does have to crank a bit before it re starts?

It starts right back up after it stalls. Again, no light is on in the dash. I do most of the work on the car myself as I used to be a mechanic working mostly on the older carburetor cars but these fuel injected cars with all these sensors are out of my league! The car runs fine, otherwise, except for the last time I was in a fast food line waiting for my food when the temperature gauge went up just past halfway and the fan turned on. I checked the antifreeze and it was fine. I am not sure what is going on with that, if anything.

The fuel pump was replaced around two years ago by a mechanic, but I am not sure what brand was put in. I did not realize how easy it was to install after watching him install it.

One other thing, once in a while while we are driving while the engine is under a load or we are accelerating it will buck once but keep on driving fine.

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to ask. I appreciate any help you can give me as this is our only vehicle and we need to keep it running.

Okay thanks. The fact it starts right back up tells me it is a fuel pump issue. If it was, there would be an extended crank time to build pressure.

Spark is the next concern. Let me get some information.

A friend of mine in Florida who run an automotive garage who I keep in contact with suggested that it could be the pickup coil in the distributor and suggested I replace the distributor. The distributor has been replaced three times in the past but for a no start problem and not a stalling problem. Let me know if this helps any.

Okay, I got a picture for you to view.

One issue this engine has is the distributor. The bushings wear and oil comes or leaks into the distributor. There is a photo cell inside that goes nuts with oil in it. This will cause the engine to stall.

Remove the distributor cap and inspect for any oil contamination.

I have not replaced the cap or rotor since the new distributor was installed which was about two years ago. Should I just replace the cap and rotor or can I just clean the cap if there is oil in the cap?

Okay, cleaning the oil is not recommended. The root cause is the bad distributor itself.

Yes, remove the cap and rotor and inspect. Let me know.

I replaced the distributor cap and rotor and the car still wants to stall, not all the time, but when it is at idle, on an incline, or when accelerating from a stop.

A separate problem that I have is the car was starting to heat up over the half way mark on the gauge and the fans were turning on, at idle as well. I replaced the thermostat as it was the original one, but to my surprise when I pulled the lower hose off of the thermostat housing no antifreeze at all came out of the block. I know that is not right, is it? I replaced the thermostat and the car is not heating up past the half way point on the gauge but I am concerned if there is a blockage in the radiator since no water was in the bottom hose.
