I have a 5 speed manual transmission. When I tried to shift into 4th gear I heard a snap. It is now stuck in third gear and the gear shifter moves freely. It will not shift into any other gear. What could be wrong?

Pull up the cup holder in front of the shifter then look under the shifter and see if one of the cable's came unhooked from the shifter. If it didn't then see if one of the cable's came unhooked from the transmission. Let me know what you find.
