Transmission problem
1998 Other Saturn Models Manual

I have a 1998 Saturn with a manual transmission and it is now sitting with 119,000 miles on it. I bought it with 75,000miles on it so most of the driving on it still isn't mine. That being said my car has been working OK for me, but I want to know what I should do to maintain the upkeep on the car at this point since I need it to last me for quite a while yet, and having bought the car used I did not receive an owners manual with it. Is there anything that you might suggest outright? Should I look at having the transmission checked? The clutch also sticks sometimes when I try to downshift to first, do you know what might be causing this?

In terms of routine maintenance, buy yourself a Chilton's Manual (or other comparable) and you will find the first chapter or so is all about routine maintenance.

Spend some time going thru the manual and you will pick up a bunch of info about how your car works and maybe some of the things you can look into to keep it up and running properly.

For your transmission, check the oil level (particulars are found in the manual) and if the tranny is shifting good (really, you probably shouldn't downshift into 1st unless you are going REALLY slow). Better to come to a stop and then shift into 1st.

Hope this helps.
