My 96 saturn sl has been for about the last two weeks making a funky clunking sound when in neutral or holding the clutch in. Not only that but the engine has been cutting out entirly for about the same amount of time. Yesterday though the engine just wouldn't start at all so I clutch started it and got it going but it cut out like 3 or 4 more times in which I clutch started it again and again. Not to mention the 2, 2 1/2 quarts of oil it's gone through in the past week. Is it really worth fixing it and if so what could the problem be?

I had a 92 saturn sl1 a couple of years ago, and to get the oil to stop leaking, I had to have an engine rebuild ($1,200). The worth of the car was so low, it wasn't worth the repair, but I did it anyways and it never ran up to par. I had a lifetime warranty on the engine and took it back several times, but things were still never the same, so I sold it for $800 just to get my headaches over with. I love Saturn, so I'm not griping about them, but their early models (92-97) with single overhead cams are known to not get proper air and fuel mixture, so I suggest either a dual cam or go with a newer year, at least a 98 or 99 and later.
