I put on the rear shock conversion shocks from air to spring but the shocks rattle. I think something to do with that center rod and nut.

Hi,

There is a good chance that something is simply loose. Take a look through this link. It explains in general how the procedure is done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-shock-absorber

Next, the attachments below are specific directions for your vehicle. The directions include torque specifications as well. Read through them and see if anything was missed, left loose, and so on.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Okay, I think I turned that shaft instead of holding it while I tighten that center nut. How do I fix that?

Hi,

The shaft from the shock where the center nut attaches will turn. That's normal, so you didn't break anything.

You will need to tighten the nut onto the upper bushing. Tighten it until the rubber bushing is flush with the outside diameter of the washer.

On most shocks, you will need to hold the shaft to tighten the center bolt. Take a look at the top of the threaded portion of the shock's threads. Either there will be a place for an allen wrench or a place for a small wrench to attach and hold the shaft in place.

While holding that shaft, use an open-ended wrench to tighten the nut.

Let me know if what you find or if there is anything I can do to help.

Take care,

And that's what I was thinking and I've done that all the way until I can't turn the nut anymore because it comes to a stop. Without the bushing I can run the nut a lot farther but when put together it only tightens so far and stops leaving the shock to me loose. I'm sure I got it on correctly. But still rattle. I'm lost and to me this should be simple job. I can't believe that I can't figure this out. It's definitely the shocks that are rattling. I am supposed to leave in the factory coil springs correct?

Maybe I'll throw a few hundred pounds in trunk and see if it stops rattling.

Hi,

There should be a bushing both on the top and bottom of the shock. Are both present? If you look at pic 1 below, I circled both. Also, pic 2 shows the lower one. Make sure it is tight.

If everything is together correctly, then there is a chance the shock is damaged even though it's new.

One other thing. You can get a rattle if the coil spring is broken or cracked. Check that as well. Check specifically where it sits in both the upper and lower insulators (mount).

Let me know what you find.

Joe
