Random smoke while driving coming from under hood?

Every now and then car will randomly start smoking with no sign of overheating temperature gauge stays normal but do also notice certain instances when in park will idle on its own and has shut off, but car automatically turns back on. Any suggestions on where to begin my search?

This sounds like you have a valve cover leak, or a coolant leak does the smoke smell like anything. I would lift the hood and check for leaks with a flashlight.
