Engine Cooling problem
2002 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 110 K miles

I believe I blew a head gasket while traveling a while ago. Since then have replaced radiator, alternator, spark plugs, & engine (rebuilt @ 62,000). Still not having sufficient power & temp remaining between 205-212. Just replaced cat converter today. Running fine, but temp staying around 200-205.

Can you tell me what the 'safe' or normal temperature range is for my 2002 grand am GT? I do not want to ruin another engine. Fans seem to be fine. Thanks :)

Operating temperature for this engine is about 210 deg F. When fully warmed up. The 3.8 liter engines run a little hotter around 215.

What temperature speeds is the vehicle experiencing the lack of power? Is it surging, revvs with no acceleration, boggs down?

FYI, always replace the oxygen sensor with head gasket failure. Part of the coolant chemistry is silica which melts to the o2 sensor element, coating it skewing the reading.

Regards.
