car overheats

temperature gauge shows the car is running hot then it goes back to 200.i think my fan do not work because i have to turn the heat on sometimes to cool it down faster.is a fan switch and coolant temperature sensor the same?which one will make my fan come on?

The coolant temp sensor would turn the fan on.So what actual temp does the fan turn on at?Also what size engine do you have?Does the upper and lower radiator hoses get really hot?
