1995 Pontiac Grand Am Transmission Failure?

1995 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I just bought my 95 grand am and have been having transmission problems. Ill be driving and notice when I slow down my car wants to die but as long as I keep going Im fine, but when I do have to stop my car dies and only will start in park or neutral. If I put it in any other gear it dies and wont run. I was just hoping for any insight on how to fix this. THANKS!

Has the check engine light come on? Does it seem as if the transmission isn't disengaging and causing the engine to die, or will the engine die if you pop it into neutral when you stop?
