Hello CarPros,

My car is aging. I have never had a tune-up. I live in the city of Boston so I don't use it that much but I do take it for 100 mile trips here and there.

I don't know any mechanics in the city and you never know who you can trust. My biggest fear is the Engine and Transmission but I am willing to test my axles and bearings as well.

What types of tests can be done for a so-called "health-check-up" for my 2003 grand am?

Thanks,
Neil

First:

Raise car, put on stands. Grasp tire and push/pull both horizontally and vertically, if any movement then possible wheel bearing, ball joint, tie rod, control arm bushing.

Check CV boots for any signs of leakage or cuts/rips in rubber boot.

Next, check all fluid levels and change oil and filter, all fluid levels include trans. power steering, coolant.

Check for any leaks under car (axle seals for example).

Tune up car with at least plugs and wires.
