The car engine temperature is higher than normal, and there is a burning smell coming from the engine. My mechanic said the smell is a sign of overheating engine.

Good afternoon.

It may be a sign or may not be a sign. If you have oil burning from a leak, it will give you this smell.

What was his conclusion in his testing?

The most likely cause is low fluid or a thermostat. Has anyone checked it for you?
