Does my transmission need replacing

My car's transmission started slipping when I would accelerate, eventually it would not go at all. I checked and added over a gallon of transmission fluid. All that has come back is reverse. Does this sound like the whole transmission is shot? Or where do I go from here?

Yeah, I would say that the transmission is shot. If you had checked it as soon as it started slipping, it might, repeat might, have been okay. Continued driving while it was so low on fluid caused the transmission to overheat and burn the clutches up. Sorry for the bad news.

You want to find that leak also, because if it is external to the transmission or even a broken oil cooler inside the radiator, then after you install a new transmission it will not last very long with a leak.
