Noises problem
1995 Other Mitsubishi Models 6 cyl Manual

I left my car for three weeks while I was on vacation. On returning, I started the car and I hear a consistent tapping noise coming from the engine. The frequency increases and decreases with acceleration and deceleration. The volume stays the same. I noticed that it was about a 1/2 quart below the lower "add oil" mark on the dipstick and I added a quart of oil which brought the level to about halfway between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. Also, could this be a gas brand problem? I always use premium grade in my car no matter where I fill it up.

Hi there,

You sound as if you have a faulty lash adjuster, try doing an engine service and add a good quality oil flush first,

Thanks for your answer. I am a woman who has little knowledge re: cars, but I love my 3000GT. I'll have my dad do the oil change you recommended, but I guess I'll have to take it in to Mitsubishi to have them do the engine service. Does a lash adjuster have something to do with the valves? When I take it in I want to appear like I have an idea of what the problem may be.

Hi there,

Yes that is correct, the lash adjuster sits on top of the valve and controllers the clearance between the valve & the cam lobe, if it fails, there is too much clearance and you get that tick sound.
