I have a 1996 Mercury Sable with the DOHC engine that started showing a high temperature. My mechanic said the thermostat was bad and replaced it. Problem not solved. The belt is turning the water pump shaft. I had taken the car to a local name brand tire dealership for an oil change and this problem cropped up after that visit. They are bunch of crooks (thought for a LOF would be OK) and I was wondering what they may have done to it to cause this condition.

Too low of oil can cause this problem if it heats up due to too much friction.

Check the level.

Other than that I dont know what they could have done, maybe disconnect a o2 sensor or mess with the timing?
