In the last 6 months I have had periodic times when you crank the engine; it starts but if you let your foot off the gas the engine simply dies. Normally, if you allow the car to set for 20 - 40 minutes; come back and crank the engine all is OK and the car runs normally.

Could this be an issue with either fuel injectors or the fuel filter?

Hi 2004mazdatribute,

I would say it is more liley to do with the idling system. Either the cold start is not working correctly or the IAC is intermittently stuck.

If the Check Engine Light is indicating, get a scan done to retrieve for trouble codes and let me know what they are if any found.

If none, get the IAC and throttle body cleaned and retest.
